I wonder if highlighting the important of local coverage in education can raise awareness, and funding, for local journalism? Is there a point of revenue generation in this kind of coverage? Young homeowners take the quality of the school districts very seriously.

Kaizar — I think you're definitely onto something here. Your point could be an angle that local papers could highlight to both readers and potential advertisers. In many areas, home values are closely linked to quality of schools...

Your questions make me think of a new revenue stream for newspapers that would also benefit the community: education special sections. These have been done before, and some of the bigger papers do them regularly. Maybe it's time for smaller local papers (or a group of them in a region) to band together and produce one.
